Водный мир в живописной традиции итальянского Возрождения. Часть 2. Траян и Теодорих («Св. Себастьян» Андреа Мантеньи)

Вторая статья в цикле публикаций о картинах итальянских художников XV—XVI вв. посвящена полотну А. Мантеньи «Святой Себастьян» из Венского художественно-исторического музея. Поскольку с античности было известно, что облака по своей природу могут быть отнесены к «водной стихии», автор выбрал предметом данного исследования связь силуэта всадника, изображенного в виде облака (король остготов Теодорих), с изображением скульптурного портрета у ног святого. Сравнение этого портрета с итальянской камеей XVI в. «Милосердие Траяна» из собрания Эрмитажа позволило идентифицировать изображение как идеализированный образ императора Траяна. По мнению автора, программа картины предполагает сравнение Траяна и Теодориха в духе «Сравнительных жизнеописаний» Плутарха.

Symbols decryption of Italian Renaissance great masters' paintings is an important task not only for a better understanding of their works. Knowledge of those symbols allows to see anew all of the Renaissance semantic space and culture, as well as rethink major worldview paradigms of this epoch.

This article is the second in publication series about the paintings of famous Italian artists of the XV—XVI centuries. The image of clouds in the picture ‘St. Sebastian’ by Andrea Mantegna and connection between this image and other details of the picture became the object of my new research (I chose the cloud including for the reason that it is also a kind of the ‘water element’ what has been known since Aristotle).

To identify the art program of Mantegna's painting I have used the method of historical and semantic analysis. I also had used as a starting point the identification (1902) of equestrian rider image on a cloud. I have compared silhouette of a rider on cloud, identified as Theoderic, king of the Ostrogoths, with the image of sculptural portrait at the St. Sebastian's feet. Comparison of this portrait with the Italian cameo ‘Clemency of Trajan’ (XVI c.) from the Hermitage collection has allowed identifying image as an idealized one of the emperor Trajan. On my opinion, the program of Mantegna's 'St. Sebastian' involves Trajan and Theoderic comparison in the spirit of Plutarch's Parallel Lives.

The hidden meaning of this comparison is that looking at the fallen Trajan, and at Theoderic, soaring in the clouds, the viewer thinks about the fall of the once great Ancient Rome and about its successors Germanic kingdoms.
